The Contemporary Austin
Exploring the art of our time through inquiry and experimentation
The Contemporary Austin offers dynamic programming all about the art of our time. Whether on-site, virtual, or during a field trip, all participants will discuss contemporary art through open-ended inquiry and also create works of art using a range of materials and processes. We work with all ages.
Field Trips:
Spend half the time looking and investigating contemporary art and the other half of the time experimenting and creating art of your own during a field trip at either Laguna Gloria or the Jones Center on Congress Avenue.
Field trips focus on current indoor gallery exhibitions at the Jones Center or various outdoor sculptures at Laguna Gloria. Both locations feature the Art Lab, an experience focused on creating in either outdoor or indoor studios.
Seeing Special Things:
Application-based program for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students and teachers that includes 3 classroom visits, 3 field trips, studio and guest artist workshops, and a campus art exhibition.
Virtual Lessons:
Tailored for your classroom needs! Delivered by museum educators, these virtual lessons feature discussions around a work of art and a brief art making session.
Professional Development:
Studio-based professional development for all teachers offered on a regular basis throughout the school year at both locations. For virtual PD, there are various topics available along with an opportunity to tailor to a specific topic or theme related to contemporary art.
Summer Studio Spectacular for Teachers:
Spend a week experimenting with 2D and 3D studio processes and learning about various international artists. Work with local artists to try something new or expand upon already established skills.
Second Saturdays are for Families:
Every second Saturday, families are invited to create a work of art inspired by a sculpture or exhibition at The Contemporary Austin.
